Respect Other People...Ruth Simmons

"I keep going back to this fundamental idea of being able to respect other people, especially if you’re in a senior position. You can get a lot more done if people have a sense that you respect them, and that you listen to them."

--Ruth J. Simmons, President, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island

Every Tuesday, WOMEN AT LIBERTY provides a platform for a variety of voices and resources to develop, encourage, and strengthen women leaders. In our last edition for 2011, we are featuring Ruth J. Simmons, President of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. President Simmons has the distinct honor of being the first woman and the first African American to lead Brown University. Furthermore, she is the first African American to lead an Ivy League institution. To read an article in which she talks to Adam Bryant of the New York Times, author of the weekly column, "The Corner Office", about the leadership lessons she has learned during her more than 30 year career, click here.
